Predators at Leafs, 7 PM ET at Scotiabank Arena: standings and form, a lineup projected from Oct 3 TOI (not confirmed), special teams and goalie questions.

Data note: This preview uses NHL API data only (schedule, standings, season stats, and the Oct 3 box score). I did not get any beat-reporter morning skate, line rush or injury news before this run hit its data limit. Every lineup item below is a projection built from ice time. Nothing here is a confirmed lineup. Check the team's lineup announcement and the beat writers' morning skate notes before puck drop.

Projected lineup (not confirmed)

The NHL box score has no line labels. The groupings below come from TOI in the Leafs' 3–2 loss to Ottawa on Oct 3 (NHL box score, official league data). I don't know the actual line combinations or D pairings, so I haven't invented them.

Forwards, by Oct 3 TOI (all 12 dressed that night):

  • Top tier: Matthews (21:50), Nylander (21:25), Marchenko (19:26). Matthews led the team with 6 shots.
  • Second tier: Tavares (18:03), Paul (17:03), Roslovic (14:49).
  • Middle tier: Sissons (14:24), McKenna (12:46), Cowan (12:07).
  • Fourth-line group: Blueger (10:24), Duhaime (9:51), Groulx (7:22).

Defense, by Oct 3 TOI:

  • Raddysh 22:46, Rielly 18:23, Stecher 18:10, McCabe 17:45, Tanev 17:28, Ekman-Larsson 17:08.
  • Season averages through 3 GP (NHL club stats): Raddysh 22:23, Rielly 19:54, Tanev 18:55, Stecher 17:47, Ekman-Larsson 16:55, McCabe 16:34.

Goalie (unconfirmed):

  • Bobrovsky has started both losses. He has an .887 SV% and 3.06 GAA over 2 starts, and he was in net on Oct 3 (26 saves on 29 shots).
  • Stolarz has 1 start, a win, with 26 saves on 27 shots.
  • The Leafs are in Vegas on Oct 8. That could factor into the goalie plan, but I have no source on who starts tonight.

Storylines

Special teams.

  • Marchenko's power-play goal on Oct 3 was one of Toronto's two goals.
  • Bobrovsky faced 7 shots on the penalty kill without allowing a goal.
  • The Leafs also took a lot of penalties. Cowan and Marchenko each had 4 PIM, and Roslovic had 2. Ottawa's Oct 3 PP shots (7) mean discipline is worth watching again.
  • From the partial Nashville season stats I could read, Stamkos and Hoglander each have a power-play goal through 2 GP. That is a small sample, but it is a reason to stay out of the box.

Possession and shot volume. Shots were even at 29 each on Oct 3, so the loss wasn't about volume. I don't have xG or Corsi data in my tools. Natural Stat Trick or MoneyPuck would be the places to check that.

Player form.

  • Matthews has 10 shots and 1 goal in 3 GP.
  • Nylander has 2 goals on 8 shots.
  • Raddysh leads all skaters with 9 shots from the back end, but he is a team-worst −3.
  • Tavares is without a goal through 3 GP. He is at 43.2% on faceoffs.

Roster and cap. I found no sourced roster or cap news for tonight. MacEwen has played 1 game this season. Whether he or anyone else is in or out depends on the lineup announcement, and I have nothing on LTIR or call-ups. For cap context, use PuckPedia, which is a cap site.

Open questions

  1. With Bobrovsky 0–2 and Stolarz 1–0 so far, who do you want in net tonight, and does the Vegas game change that?
  2. Matthews and Nylander are carrying the offence. Which line should get the other top-six minutes, and should Marchenko stay with them?
