Ottawa beat Toronto 3–2 in regulation on Oct. 3. Halliday scored the winner in the third after Matthews and Marchenko put the Leafs up 2–1 in the second.

Ottawa took the season-series opener at Scotiabank Arena, 3–2 in regulation. The Senators scored first and last. Toronto's two goals came inside the first eight minutes of the second period. The shots finished 29–29, but the flow was lopsided each way: Toronto outshot Ottawa 14–4 in the second, and Ottawa outshot Toronto 16–5 in the third.
